Steven Van Zandt has left The Sopranos fans shocked today after appearing on This Morning looking a world away from his sharp-suited character Silvio Dante.

The American actor, who is also an acclaimed musician and member of Bruce Spingsteen’s E Street Band, joined presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on the ITV show to discuss his memoir, Unrequited Infatuations.

But viewers were left distracted by Steven’s attire, which included a colourful patchwork shirt, undone to show his chest, teamed with a vibrant scarf and matching headwear.

One person wrote on Twitter: ‘Bless Stevie he’s fashioned a nice outfit out of his sofa upholstery.’

Another joked: ‘When you’ve got an interview on This Morning at 11.40 and a job to pretend to be a carpet at 11.50’, while a third added: ‘Stevie wearing three different sofa patterns.’

The Sopranos was Steven’s first time on the small screen aside from a cameo in 1985’s American Flyers.

Silvio Dante was a hugely successful character in the show and appeared in a total of 79 of the programme’s 86 episodes.

Earlier this month, Steven revealed he was originally cast as Tony Soprano in the iconic mafia drama before James Gadoffini was given the memorable part – only to be vetoed by HBO executives.

Steven, 70, revealed that bosses refused to cast an unheard of actor as the main part in a show which cost $2million per episode to create.

After being cast as lead character Tony by the show’s creator David Chase before they began filming the series, he recalled HBO – who were funding the project – saying: ‘Are you out of your f****** mind?

‘This is the most expensive show we’ll ever do, we can’t have a guy that never acted before.’

Speaking to Fox News, he added: ‘So, wiser heads prevailed, thankfully, and one of the greatest actors ever, [James] Gandolfini, got the gig.’

Despite missing out on the lead role, Steven went on to bag two Screen Actors Guild Awards as part of the cast ensemble for The Sopranos.
