Graeme Souness has claimed that West Ham defender Kurt Zouma shouldn’t play again this season.

West Ham manager David Moyes has continued to select Zouma despite a video having been posted on social media of the centre-back kicking and slapping one of his cats.

The centre-back featured for West Ham against Watford and was also named in the starting lineup against Leicester but had to withdraw from the latter fixture due to illness.

Souness believes that West Ham haven’t handled the situation correctly and claimed that Zouma shouldn’t play until he apologises for his actions.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Souness said: ‘I’ve got zero sympathy for him. The vast majority of West Ham fans would not be accepting of him. For me if you’re looking at that video the cat hasn’t done anything wrong. It’s abuse for entertainment.

‘They decide to put it on social media. The fact that they put it on social media suggests they didn’t think anything was wrong with the behaviour.’

‘I think they’ve mis-managed it from day one. I wouldn’t have played him again this year. As a player I wouldn’t want to be in the dressing room with him. Statements mean nothing, fines mean nothing in this instance.’

Zouma’s brother Yoan has been banned by Dagenham & Redbridge for his role in the video.

West Ham intend to wait for the investigation into Zouma’s action to be completed before donating his maximum fine of £250,000 to animal charities and sending him on animal welfare courses. Zouma’s two pet cats have  been seized by the RSPCA.

Moyes stated that he wants to ensure that Zouma’s mental health is protected.

Moyes said: ‘The boy is so remorseful. ‘We have a duty of care. Even the mental health side of things. We’re trying to make sure we give him support.’

Zouma was booed by both sets of supporters as West Ham beat Watford 1-0 on Tuesday.
