“Albania, second home for Jews”

In all the meetings that Prime Minister Rama is holding during his official visit to Jerusalem, he has repeated boastfully that his country has always been a second home for Jews.

In the speech held by the Movement “Fight Anti-Semitism”, Rama brought concrete examples that proved that regardless of who was in power in Albania, the Catholic Church and the citizens themselves, never handed over the Jews when they were wanted during the Second World War, and for this reason they were much more after the war than before it.

“An expedition of the Reich’s special forces, based in Belgrade, was appointed to arrest all Jewish men living in Pristina. The director of the hospital, an Albanian from Albania, Dr. Spiro Lito, asked the Albanian patients to leave the hospital, even with serious injuries, to return home and free up their beds, and he housed all the Jewish men of the city in the hospital. To prevent entry to the hospital for checks, the director surrounded the entire territory of the hospital with signs that read: “Deadly virus. Do not come near”.

For Rama, the protection and salvation of the Jews is a natural Albanian virtue and he emphasized this in the meetings he had with President Isak Herzog and with the head of the Israeli Parliament Micheky Levy, with whom, just like with the Prime Minister the day before, they shared their views to intensify cooperation in sectors such as economy or tourism. But Rama has also sought expertise in technology and cyber security.

During the second day of his visit to Jerusalem, Rama requested and had the opportunity to meet with the leader of the opposition, former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
