Edi Rama: The Albanian language is in danger, the dictionary is half of the real language

Prime Minister Rama has expressed on the 50th anniversary of the Orthography Congress that the Albanian language is in danger and that the dictionary of the Albanian language is half the size of the real language, therefore the Academy of Sciences has opened the door to review the dictionary.

“What is more important is the threat to the Albanian language. I’m expressing it in the words of Robert Elsie when he says “I suffer a lot for vocabulary, because when I read Albanian literature and when I come across a word I don’t understand, I can’t find it in the dictionary of the academy and that annoys me a lot. The dictionary of the Albanian language is only half of the real language”.

While the vocabulary of daily spoken Albanian with these (telephone) is one thousandth of the real language. Klm, pqf, tdsh and these, so the dictionary of the Albanian language, which is one of the by-products of the Spelling Congress, and its lexicological and phraseological wealth, are today a very big question mark. I am very happy to use this moment to say that the Academy of Sciences has finally opened the door to revising the dictionary, and it took a communist at the head of the Academy of Sciences to restart the work from the ground up, to tell the truth.

Don’t worry at all about what the anti-communists will say after this speech of mine in the coming days, which is the most terrible legacy that the communists actually left us. I don’t blame Skenderi for being a communist, I blame him for leaving Saliu, lest we politicize him.

Speaking about the dictionary, I want to express the wish, the hope, the desire that we succeed in having a new dictionary, as opposed to succeeding in having a history of Albanians, what has started and this as work, and then an encyclopedia , which has also started as work. There are three very basic books that have been missing for many, many years, unfortunately in these many, many years, we have lost many human resources that would be guarantees for these three basic books”, said Rama. /broread
