Queen’s former Jaguar X Type which ‘was her second favourite vehicle’ sells at auction for £43,000

Queen Elizabeth’s former Jaguar X Type – her ‘second favourite vehicle’ has sold at auction for more than £43,000.

The regency green 2009 estate car has a barley leather interior and was first owned by HM the Queen, often pictured driving it out of Windsor Castle.

While the late monarch’s favourite motor was said to be her Landrover Defender, the Jag is believed to have been a ‘close second’.

In one set of photos advertising the car, the Queen can be seen driving up Windsor’s Long Walk, looking ‘happy and healthy’ in a pink floral hat.

The motor, which has 72,500 miles on the clock, was fitted with a powerful 3.0 litre V6 228 bhp engine capable of 146mph.

It went under the hammer with an extensive history file detailing its royal provenance for £38,000 at Historics of Iver, Bucks, with added fees taking the total paid to £43,400.

James Good, specialist at Historics, said: ‘What a thrill it has been to offer Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Jaguar for sale.

‘We are absolutely delighted, as I am sure the new owner is. It’s an immensely collectible car.

‘This fantastic piece of Royal history is presented in emerald fire with barley leather interior and has provenance which is impossible to match. It is completely unique.

‘Its Royal ownership is confirmed by its original booklet confirming the registration which can be seen in photos with HM the Queen at the wheel.

‘It comes with a sunroof, automatic transmission, electric windows, climate control, a good service history, Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate and has been well maintained.

‘The Royal Family might have a long history with Bentley state limousines, but they love Jaguars as well.

‘Although the late Queen Elizabeth II was seen behind the wheel of several cars during her long reign, she had a particular liking for her Landrover Defender.

'From 2004 to 2009, the X-Type Estate wasn't among the most desirable models the brand ever built but who would have thought this would be one of Queen Elizabeth II's go-to vehicles?'

‘When that was unavailable, however, she had a back-up car, a Jaguar X-Type Estate.

‘In the pictures, you can see HM Queen Elizabeth II driving this very car with Her Majesty wearing sunglasses and a headscarf which was so typical.

‘She looked happy and healthy, leaving Windsor Castle behind her and at the wheel of the Jaguar, driving up the Long Walk.
