President Bajram Begaj says that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent him a request together with the explanatory report to grant authorization regarding the issue of the sea with Greece.
Asked by journalists, President Begaj admitted that there is such a request and that he is considering this request.
“We have an issue with neighboring Greece, and it is true that I have a request from the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs which is accompanied by an explanatory statement.
As the President of the Republic in implementation of the constitutional obligations, I assess this request with the utmost seriousness and I believe that it is an issue that must find a solution. Its solution is based on the Constitution of the Republic of Albania, on the decision of the Constitutional Court of 2010, on international acts and laws, international agreements, on internal laws but also on the rules of good neighborliness and reciprocity. Greece is a strategic partner of ours, but it is also an important economic partner. We have the Albanian community in Greece and the Greek community in Albania, which are strong connecting bridges of this friendship and this cooperation. I have met Prime Minister Rama several times. The issues that I have discussed have been public, topics related to national security have been discussed, issues related to the foreign service have been discussed, with ambassadors. Communication is institutional, it is very good. I believe it is positively the way we meet and discuss issues”, said President Bajram Begaj.
The head of state made this statement during the press conference with the President of Poland, who is on an official visit to Tirana.
Tirana and Athens have officially declared that they will resolve the sea issue at the Hague Court.
