BRIAN LAUDRUP: The Tottenham job would be huge for Ange Postecoglou and for Scottish football

I think this is a great time to take the Tottenham job. I really do. Given all their recent woes, a manager with a clear plan has an opportunity to go there, make an impact and be viewed as a saviour.

Will that be Ange Postecoglou? Time will tell. But there’s no doubt further news of Spurs’ intentions will be eagerly awaited. On both sides of Glasgow.

A lot of Rangers fans — and I think Michael Beale as well — would love to see Postecoglou move on from Celtic. In my view, it would actually be a feather in the cap of Scottish football if his excellent achievements in the Premiership were recognised by an approach from a club such as Spurs.

Were he to accept, Celtic would obviously do everything to find the best possible replacement.

Often, though, it takes a little while for a new manager to put across his own ideas and make the changes he wants. A degree of uncertainty is introduced.

Postecoglou leaving wouldn’t give Rangers the upper hand for next season. Not with the structure and the squad the Australian has put in place at Parkhead.

But it would, at least, give my old club a chance to even things up if they got their own business right this summer. That latter point remains absolutely critical, regardless of what happens with Postecoglou.

I’ve never hidden my admiration for the job done by the Celtic manager. The speed with which he introduced a new culture to the club was sensational — at odds with the norm — and he reaped huge rewards from that. He raised the bar in Scottish football and has done pretty much everything right since he joined.

It looks like Spurs are now very interested. And I can understand that for sure.

As I said, people maybe look at the issues Tottenham have right now and think it’s a bad point to take charge in north London. I totally disagree.

This is a team under-performing and facing a lot of criticism. Plentiful flak has also been directed towards Daniel Levy.

If a new manager comes in, stabilises things and gets Spurs on the right track, he would gain so much credit. That’s why it’s a good opportunity. With proper guidance, the only way should be up.

There is a little bit of similarity to what Postecoglou did at Parkhead. When he took over, Celtic were in a very difficult situation after the disaster of their failed attempt for ten in a row.

Rangers looked the dominant club at that point. But he rapidly turned it around.

Of course, the English Premier League is a very different beast. The competition down there is incredibly tough.

But no one expects Tottenham to suddenly become title favourites next season. It would be about building back into European qualification and progressing from there.

If an offer comes, Postecoglou will have to think very hard. For now, I’m sure his mind will be focused on winning the Treble in this weekend’s Scottish Cup final against Inverness. It could be two seasons with five trophies and a lot of good football.

His only regret, if he was to go this summer, would be the Champions League. He would have loved to have shown Celtic could get results in Europe playing his way.

If you look at the two years as a whole, however, I’m certain he would be remembered fondly for a very long time. Moving on during a close season also causes far fewer issues than leaving in the middle of a campaign.

Common sense just says it’s a huge decision for him if Spurs make a genuine offer. Were that to happen, I could see him going. The timing might just be right.

While that would be good news for Rangers, it won’t matter much unless they get their squad rebuild spot-on this summer. We’ve already seen a good impact from Beale’s January signings — Nico Raskin and Todd Cantwell — but an awful lot of work still needs to be done.

Rangers need players of a similar standard at goalkeeper, centre-back, winger and striker. For starters.

They must be successful in all those areas if they are going to make a real title push next season. While a lot might happen at Celtic over the coming weeks, first and foremost Rangers need to make sure their own house is in order.

In that respect, I like what I’ve heard from Beale when he talks about adding some experience. Because you need a balance.

It’s always good to get young players in. They are hungry, have good potential to improve and can be easier to buy in terms of finance.

Equally, though, you need a level of experience to support them. And there’s no question Rangers are losing a lot of that this summer.

Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield are two obvious ones, but even Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent have seen and done so much at the age of 26.

You need new additions you can bank on. Guys who won’t get too nervous or heavy-legged when it matters. Yes, they can be more expensive but sometimes you need to spend a little more to be sure of what you’re getting.

Players of that ilk aren’t just important for big games. They also continue to drive standards in training sessions.

It’s vital because there simply cannot be a repeat of this season. No trophies at Rangers is never acceptable and we all know the kind of criticism that will follow if they don’t start the new campaign in a positive fashion.

With that in mind, I’ve also seen Beale saying he wants players in as early as possible. Kieran Dowell has already signed while reports suggest Dujon Sterling will do so soon.

The club are back in pre-season training at the end of June and the value of having a good number of new faces already present is significant.

You need time to gel. You need time for players to realise exactly what Rangers demands and where they fit into Beale’s style of play.

The earlier that happens, the bigger the chance of success. New players always need a bit of leeway to adapt but at Ibrox patience is limited. That’s just the way of it.

But are Rangers building to face a Celtic side under Postecoglou or someone new? We should find out soon.
